Papers of Luigi Silva (1903-1961), including manuscripts, teaching materials, clippings, correspondence, photographs, programs and publicity materials, broken runs of periodicals dating from the 1920's, microfilms. Writings include manuscript drafts of his Vademecum, notes and drafts of an unfinished work on the history of the violoncello and its technique and performance, a workbook for a cello method in collaboration with Rudolf Matz, bibliographies of cello methods in collaboration with Elizabeth Cowling and Joan Mack, draft essays on aspects of performance practice and pedagogical draft essays and notes. Also included is a catalog of cellists (ms. in various hands). Teaching materials include exercises in harmony and Silva's compositions as a student, class records from 1954-55 and 1957-61, teaching notes 1956-61, papers by Silva's students. Biographical material includes correspondence 1924-60; clippings 1922-61; photographs of family, friends, students and professional photographs 1922-61, original drawings of Silva. Programs, memorial recitals, and addresses, 1925-1968; publicity materials, including notices and brochures on Silva, other performers and Silva's students; a nearly complete run of Le Violoncelle (Paris, 1922-1938).
